 Roses Blooming in the Rain

World Foreign Language Primary School International Division

Girls' Football Team Advances to Semifinals via Penalty Shootout

On June 15, amid torrential rain, the quarterfinal knockout of the "Xuhui Experimental-Huajing Cup" Primary School Girls' Football Tournament took place at Xuhui Experimental Primary School. Competing in the tournament for the first time, the World Foreign Language Primary School International Division, girls' football team defeated last year's semifinalist and seeded team, Gaolan Road No.1 Primary School. This was achieved with a penalty shootout score of 4:3 (aggregate score 5:4),  and they proudly advanced to the semifinals.

This hard-fought battle in the rain was not only a contest of skills and willpower but also a testament to the warmth and strength of football that transcends victory and defeat.

#### Pre-Match Challenges:

Unwavering Dedication Despite Adverse Weather

On the stormy match day, heavy rain poured down, yet none of the World Foreign Language girls' football team members were absent, with all parents and coaches also in attendance. However, ten minutes before kick-off, a crisis struck. Key player Renée's shoes were deemed non-compliant with regulations. In a pinch, they received help from Qiuzhi Primary School, borrowing a pair of shoes from their players to ensure her participation. "No one flinched in the rain," said PE teacher Sophia, the team leader. "The girls stood in a row, their eyes brighter than on a sunny day."

#### Fierce Battle in the Rain:

Tactics and Passion Collide

In the first half, under the tactical guidance of coaches Liu Daxiang and Chen Yingchao, the World Foreign Language team maintained control with a solid defense and counterattack strategy. They demonstrated excellent tactical discipline and kept the score 0:0 at halftime. Twelve minutes into the second half, right-back Marcha intercepted the ball in midfield and calmly crossed it to central midfielder Ellie. Ellie quickly played a straight pass to forward Renée, whose No.9  jersey became a blur as she burst through two defenders' tackles in the box and fired a刁钻 (precise) low shot into the far corner—Goal! The 1:0 breakthrough ignited the crowd.

The opponents, Gaolan Road No.1 quickly counterattacked, equalizing with five minutes left in the second half. At full-time, the score stood at 1:1, sending the match into a brutal penalty shootout.

#### Penalty Shootout Thriller:

The Goalkeeper's Iron Defense **4:3 Decisive Moment**

In the downpour, World Foreign Language goalkeeper Alice equalized with the first penalty. In the second round, her heroic save deflected the opponent's shot, and Renée's powerful strike put them ahead 2:1. In the third round, Ellie hit the post, missing a chance to seal a victory. The fourth round saw both sides score, leveling it to 3:3. In the fifth round, Alice saved again, but Bonnie's shot was blocked, squandering another match-winning opportunity. When third-grader Jasmine stepped up for the sixth-round penalty, the stadium fell silent except for the rain. With a composed run-up and strike, her shot found the net! The scoreboard定格 (froze) at 4:3. Coaches and substitutes stormed the pitch, their cheers and tears blending in the rain. On the sodden pitch,雨水 (rainwater) mixed with sweat, and towels exchanged between opponents gave this victory a warmth beyond the scoreline.

#### Beyond Victory:

Football Weaving a Web of Camaraderie

As the final whistle pierced the rain, the two drenched teams joined hands on the waterlogged pitch. The victorious droplets falling from the World Foreign Language players' hair mingled with the defeated tears on the Gaolan Road No.1 goalkeeper's cheek, painting a moving scene that transcended胜负 (win-loss). They bowed to the sidelines together, rainwater trailing down their jerseys, yet failing to dampen the misty eyes in the coaching box or the hoarse cheers from parents. This match was a prism reflecting the resilience of the young female footballers, the wisdom of the coaching staff, and the charm of football that spans age and competition. As raindrops clung to their hair, these "little roses" running on the pitch had already won a medal more precious than the score. It was the clasped hands in the rain, the hugs across victory and defeat, and the ever-lasting growth印记 (mark) forged by passion.
