The Bright "World Foreign Language Blue"
Students at the International Division of Shanghai World Foreign Language Primary School have a solid foundation for growth built by the school’s comprehensive physical education system and diverse activity arrangements on campus. Every weekend, their passion for sports extends to off-campus arenas.
Dressed in the blue team uniforms of World Foreign Language Primary School, the striking figures in "World Foreign Language Blue" shine in various sports venues. With dedication and perseverance, they write a growth story that spans from campus to the wider community, demonstrating the unique charm of a diverse and extended sports life.
The sports atmosphere on campus has long been integrated into daily life: basic training in physical education classes and specialized guidance in after-school sports clubs have sown the seeds of sports like football, basketball, martial arts, and rugby in students’ hearts.
Students from Grades 3 to 5 on the football team consolidate their technical skills through on-campus training. It is thanks to this foundation that they can confidently participate in the off-campus "Pany Yi Cup" (Panyi Cup) every weekend. Even students who graduated from Grade 5 last year reunite on the field every weekend, bonded by the football friendships they formed at school. Coach Liu Daxiang not only polishes the players’ skills on campus but also leads them beyond the school to play friendly matches with sister schools. While making friends through sports, the team’s on-campus training results are tested and improved in real competitions.
The growth of the basketball team is a vivid example of "laying a foundation on campus and achieving breakthroughs off-campus." Behind this breakthrough lies the hardship of participating in a competition for the first time and the joint perseverance of teachers and students. As the first basketball team ever formed by the International Division to compete in a tournament, the players faced dual challenges of "limited time and difficult teamwork" after receiving the invitation to the international school competition. At that time, the players had little rapport with each other, and they also needed to balance academic studies, leaving very limited time for training.
To seize this rare opportunity, foreign teacher Dario took the initiative to use fragmented after-school time to refine each player’s coordination skills—from basic passing to tactical positioning—guiding them hands-on to build the team’s tactical framework. The players also cherished this chance deeply as they took the initiative to practice extra after class, discussed tactics during breaks, and even efficiently finalized the team uniform order. In just one week, they transformed from "dispersed individuals" into a "united team," turning every bit of effort put in during limited on-campus time into confidence for the off-campus competition.
In the end, this "rookie team"—with no experience in major competitions—fought bravely against teams from multiple international schools. Though they had both wins and losses, they gained far more than just results. They acquired practical experience and team cohesion. What was even more touching was that a birthday party was held for student Eric Wu during the break, allowing the team warmth fostered on campus to extend beyond the school boundaries. Parents watched with admiration, commenting, "Such off-campus activities that overcome difficulties and unite people are truly meaningful. Wwe hope there will be more of them!"
The twin sisters on the fencing team also step out of the campus to compete. Last weekend, they traveled to Hainan for a fencing tournament. The elder sister won two bronze medals (in individual and team events), while the younger sister took home a silver medal in the team event. This weekend, despite feeling unwell, they still persisted in completing the fencing competition in Shanghai. As their father said, "Medals are only a testament to short-term efforts. The more precious value of fencing lies in teaching children that ‘this journey is long, and you can’t win every time.’" Through the tiredness of training sessions and the ups and downs of competitions, they have learned not to give up easily and developed the perseverance to face difficulties. This resilience, rooted deep in their character, will support them far more than any medal ever could.
While various sports activities run smoothly on campus, students step into a broader sports world on weekends. They sweat on professional tennis courts, build rapport with horses at equestrian venues, and challenge speed and balance on ski slopes. From sports enlightenment on campus to in-depth off-campus experiences, from technical learning in classes to real competitions on the field, the sports life of students at the International Division has long transcended campus boundaries. It forms a complete growth path of "laying a foundation on campus and extending off-campus." This cross-campus passion for sports not only enriches their after-school life but also embeds the spirit of sports deeply in their hearts, shaping them into positive, challenge-seeking individuals.
