WFL Students Embrace a Vibrant Spring | Exploring Urban Cultural Heritage & Unlocking the Secrets to Health

As the gentle spring breeze arrives and a sense of joy fills the air, a series of exciting “Well-being Festival” activities are underway at the International Division of Shanghai World Foreign Language Primary School. In addition to regular weekly fitness check-ins, students also took part this week in an engaging nutrition and health workshop and an immersive outdoor hiking experience. Through the integration of movement and learning, they are discovering the joy of active and balanced growth.

Urban Hiking: An 8 km Journey Through History and Community

A group of Year students transformed into “young urban explorers” as they embarked on a meaningful city hiking journey through the Xuhui Wutong Area. Challenging themselves to complete an 8-kilometre walk, they wandered along the plane tree-lined streets of the Hengshan Road–Fuxing Road Historical and Cultural Area.

The red-brick walls and historic architecture reflect Shanghai’s rich heritage since its opening as a port, while the leafy avenues echo the charm of Shanghai-style culture and a significant chapter of modern Chinese literary history.

Along the way, students ran, played, and walked together, quite literally measuring the city with their footsteps. They even created a heart-shaped formation during the walk, marking a warm and meaningful beginning to the school’s upcoming charity event. With parents accompanying them throughout, the students demonstrated impressive stamina and strong teamwork.

This activity also coincided with the 48th National Tree Planting Day in 2026 and the 19th anniversary of the Shanghai Roots & Shoots Million Tree Planting Project. Students actively participated in the “Tree for a Fresh Start” initiative, stepping into nature and embracing environmental responsibility. Through this experience, they planted the seeds of care for both the environment and their community, contributing in their own way to a more sustainable future.

Nutrition Workshop: Discovering the Science of Healthy Growth

As part of the Well-being Festival, the school welcomed Dr. Wang Xiaoxia, a food scientist, who delivered an engaging and informative session on nutrition and healthy development.

Using accessible and engaging language, Dr. Wang introduced key concepts of healthy growth. Students assessed their own development using height reference charts and explored essential nutrients such as calcium, protein, and DHA. They also learned how vitamin D supports calcium absorption and how choline contributes to brain development.

The formula for predicting future height sparked great curiosity among the students. Dr. Wang emphasized that while genetics play a role, balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep are the true foundations of healthy growth.

Students were introduced to effective growth-supporting activities, including jumping exercises such as skipping and basketball, as well as stretching activities like swimming and bar exercises. They also learned the practical nutrition guideline: “Eat well at breakfast, eat enough at lunch, and eat light at dinner,” along with recommended foods for height development and brain health.

Learning Through Experience, Growing Through Exploration

From exploring the city’s cultural heritage through outdoor walking to gaining scientific knowledge in the classroom, the Well-being Festival offers students meaningful opportunities to learn through experience.

Through a variety of engaging activities, the school continues to support students’ holistic development—empowering them to grow, explore, and thrive in joyful and purposeful ways.
