From “Learning to Know” to “Learning to Learn”: Experiencing the Power of ATL
More Than Teaching: The Power of Approaches to Learning
开学第一天,世外小学体育馆里,一场充满互动、体验与思考的开学典礼拉开帷幕,本学期的主题是“More Than Teaching: The Power of Approaches to Learning”。

On the first day of school, the WFLPS gymnasium came alive with an opening ceremony filled with interaction, hands-on experiences, and reflection, all centred around this semester’s theme: “More Than Teaching: The Power of Approaches to Learning.”
The ATLs, or Approaches to Learning, encompasses five key skill areas: Thinking, Social, Communication, Research, and Self-Management. ATL is not an additional subject or a separate curriculum; rather, it is the foundation that supports learning in every lesson, every inquiry, and every collaboration.
At the opening ceremony, teachers introduced the new semester through the “Five Golden Keys,” using engaging stories and sound-based games to develop students’ focus and listening skills. Student representatives from each grade then shared authentic experiences from their holidays, reflecting on how they had used their ATL skills to view and understand the world around them through an “ATL lens.”
Three interactive challenges brought laughter, energy, and plenty of creative thinking to the gymnasium, giving students the opportunity to experience ATL skills in action.
The Principal and teachers also presented flowers to each class as a symbol of planting seeds of hope for the new semester. Student representatives confidently shared their wishes for the year ahead — from being braver and making new friends to developing new skills and trying new things.
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach them to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.
This semester, we hope to plant a seed of “learning how to learn” in every child. There is no need to rush for the flowers to bloom. Instead, we will nurture that seed through everyday classroom experiences, allowing it to grow steadily and naturally.
A new semester begins with learning how to learn. May every student become a more confident, capable, and self-directed lifelong learner.
