Through the Lens: Celebrating China Through Light and Shadow

WFLPS International Division’s “The Beauty of China” Photo Exhibition

To nurture students’ cultural confidence and help them discover the beauty of China through observation and documentation, WFLPS International Division launched The Beauty of China photo project to celebrate National Day. The result was a heartwarming exhibition, filled with the creativity and curiosity of young photographers, which opened in the Exhibition Space on the second floor.

Open to all students, the project invited learners to pick up cameras and capture the stories of China around them. A wide range of themes were accepted: magnificent landscapes, distinctive architecture, local delicacies, people in traditional costumes, or beloved individuals from daily life could all become photographic subjects. Every photograph offered a glimpse of China through a child’s eyes.

Following the collection of entries, everyone worked together to bring the exhibition to life.

Red lanterns and paper fans decorate the corridor, creating a festive Chinese atmosphere. Students’ photographs line the walls, capturing everything from beautiful landscapes to everyday moments, offering glimpses of China. Red display stands adorned with traditional Chinese ornaments add to the festive setting, bringing together cultural heritage and children’s creativity. Scrolls featuring students’ calligraphy add another layer of elegance. Delicate brushstrokes and classical Chinese poetry bring a sense of calm and literary beauty to the space. Photography and calligraphy come together to celebrate traditional Chinese aesthetics. An ordinary school corridor has been transformed into a welcoming exhibition space, inviting visitors to pause, explore and appreciate the beauty of China as seen through the lenses and expressed through the brushstrokes of our young learners.

This project encourages students to become curious inquirers, thoughtful observers and learners with a strong sense of identity. It also places importance on understanding local cultures as part of developing a sense of who we are and how we connect with the world around us. This exhibition offered students a meaningful opportunity to put these ideas into practice.

As young photographers, students looked beyond the classroom, observing their surroundings, documenting what they discovered and reflecting on what makes China special to them. Through their search for the beauty of China, they explored the richness of Chinese culture and developed a deeper appreciation of their cultural heritage. During the exhibition, students shared the stories behind their photographs and exchanged ideas about their experiences. Through these conversations, they also learned to appreciate different perspectives and forms of expression.

Each photograph captures a moment, yet the stories and feelings behind them will last. Together, these images offer a vivid glimpse of China through children’s eyes. More than a photography project and exhibition, “The Beauty of China” offered students a meaningful opportunity to connect with their cultural heritage. Through these experiences, a sense of belonging and appreciation for their country can take root and grow.
